Kirkcaldy Corps in Scotland has marked 140 years of worship, mission and service with a special anniversary weekend on 27 and 28 June 2026
The Salvation Army began its work in Kirkcaldy, on the north shore of Scotland’s Firth of Forth, in June 1886 and has continued to serve the local community ever since. The anniversary celebrations welcomed The Salvation Army’s Chief of the Staff, Commissioner Edward Hill, and World Secretary for Women’s Ministries, Commissioner Shelley Hill. They were joined by the Northeast England Divisional Youth Band and Youth Chorus, whose members travelled more than 140 miles from North Shields to take part.
Celebrating service across the generations
The weekend began with a reception for serving officers, retired officers, employees and corps leaders from the area. Welcoming those gathered to the Kingdom of Fife, Commissioners Hill thanked them for their commitment and leadership, recognising ‘the extraordinary wealth of experience and service in the room’.
The commissioners later met members of the youth band and chorus, offering encouragement to younger Salvationists. Drawing on Psalm 33:3, the Chief challenged them to use their gifts wholeheartedly in worship: ‘Sing to him a new song; play skilfully, and shout for joy.’
Young people from Northeast England and Fife then took part in outdoor activities together, forming new friendships before preparing for an evening concert at Kirkcaldy’s historic Old Kirk.
Around 150 people attended the concert, including Deputy Lord-Lieutenant Professor Jean Ker, Councillor Judy Hamilton and divisional leaders Major Janet Robson and Captain John Clifton. The programme combined praise, worship and reflection through music, dance and testimony. The youth band and chorus presented a wide range of pieces, including ‘All Creatures Praise’, ‘Joy’, ‘Go Down Moses’, ‘He Will Hold Me Fast’ and ‘Goodness of God’.
Jak Camp performed the euphonium solo ‘In Christ Alone’, accompanied by the youth band, while Grace Lightley presented ‘Holy Forever’ on the piano. Dance performances, personal testimonies and an epilogue from the Chief of the Staff also featured, before the concert concluded with a united performance of ‘Total Praise’.
A place of prayer open to everyone
More than 140 people gathered for worship at Kirkcaldy Corps on Sunday morning, led by Corps Officer Captain Andrew Manley and supported by the visiting youth sections and local leaders. During the service, Commissioners Hill dedicated the corps’ new accessible mercy seat*. The specially designed place of prayer includes room for people to kneel, pull up a chair or remain seated in a wheelchair, ensuring that everyone can respond during worship.
Commissioner Shelley Hill offered a prayer of thanksgiving for the corps’ first 140 years and sought God’s guidance for the years ahead. The Chief preached from Hebrews 6, using the new mercy seat to encourage fresh commitments to the advancement of God’s Kingdom.
Following worship, visitors explored displays documenting the corps’ history, before gathering for an anniversary photograph and a three-course celebration meal. The meal was prepared and served by volunteers from Hayfield Community Centre, with which the corps works in partnership on a range of community projects and mission opportunities.
The anniversary weekend was one of 12 events planned throughout the year to commemorate the significant milestone.
Captain Manley said: ‘We are truly blessed to have welcomed the commissioners, the Northeast England Divisional Youth Sections and the many people who visited over the weekend, some for the first time and others for the first time in many years. We thank God and give him all the glory. Here’s to the next 140 years.’
*A mercy seat is a place at the front of a Salvation Army worship space where people can kneel or sit to pray, reflect and respond to God.
