SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (March 13, 2020) – The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division is working closely with the City of Detroit to address the COVID-19 outbreak.

In response to the growing needs of the community impacted by novel coronavirus, the City of Detroit has requested the use of The Salvation Army Harbor Light’s Ellen Thompson Center, located at 3737 Humboldt in Detroit, to use as an Emergency Quarantine Center. The Salvation Army is prepared to assist and will relinquish the facility to the City of Detroit on Friday, March 13.

“The Salvation Army has been in communication with local officials and working in partnership to respond to the needs of the community during the COVID-19 outbreak,” said Lt. Col. John Turner, divisional commander for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division.

Current shelter residents are currently being relocated to the main building on the campus to allow for the isolation needed for the Quarantine Center. Salvation Army staff will assist in packing and relocating individuals’ belongings. There will be no interruption of services to those seeking emergency shelter.
