What do you do with The Salvation Army?
Whatever is needed! I’ve spent years [as a soldier since 1996] at the Detroit Temple Corps working with the youth and young adult ministries and as a member of the corps’ council. I’m part of the leadership team that helps with the planning and implementation of events like health fairs, women’s ministries programs and revivals.
Why do you do it?
I want to experience God firsthand and not from the first pew.
What’s the best part about your service?
The people. Every heart I’ve encountered has blessed me and is where I find joy. As I matured in ministry, I realized that every crossing of paths was purposed by God and deserved my full investment of time in that season.
How did you become involved with the Army?
I was introduced to The Salvation Army by an invitation to attend a revival that was happening that week. I managed a dental office around the corner from the corps, and Envoy Artee Lewis came in for some dental work and mentioned it. I went and have never left.
What’s on your playlist?
I’m a huge urban gospel fan; songs by the Rev. James Cleveland, Mississippi Mass Choir, Walter and Tremaine Hawkins, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, the Winans. The list goes on. That’s the music that settles me and gives peace.
What lifts you up?
God, my husband and son, my family, my church family and true friendships built on years of growing together and weathering storms.
What’s your favorite Bible verse?
Jeremiah 29:11. Anybody who truly knows me can answer that question without hesitation.
What do you do in your spare time?
Not that I have much of it, but any spare time is spent creating something—crocheting, painting, writing—or reading.
