This summer 19 young adults from the Central Territory joined 100 other volunteers from 10 countries for sports and outreach in Rio de Janiero during the Olympics. The mission teams were split into two blocks, each covering a week of the games and working with a domestic team comprised of cadets, officers, young people and volunteers. According to Lt. Colonel David Bowles, sports ministry coordinator for Europe, the focus was to impact the local neighborhood with the gospel and to make disciples for Christ using the tools of sport and play. The Central Territory global mission team was part of the second block of ministry. After a warm greeting and extensive orientation, they were split into two groups which then …

UPDATE #1 The Creative Arts Service Team (CAST) hit the ground running the moment we returned to territorial headquarters from commissioning weekend. While the other summer mission teams were preparing to depart for their locations, CAST began rehearsing a choreographed drama, “Jesus Theatre: Balloons.” It shows a creative and fun view of the gospel and the power of God’s love through acting and dancing. The second show we’ve been working on, “The Kingdom of God is…,” will show what the Kingdom of God is and who is welcome there. It features a variety of our team’s artistic and musical talents and different ways to praise the Lord. CAST is quite a diverse group. We come from all over the Central Territory—Minnesota, …

UPDATE #1 For the first week of our journey the Central team headed to the Janesville, Wis., Corps to meet Majors Bob and Ruth Fay. We got to the corps late in the evening, so we were all quite tired, but the immediate energy pouring from Major Ruth gave us excitement for the work ahead of us. For the short time we were there we sent kids to camp, helped in the feeding program, led worship in a prayer meeting and evangelized through inviting people to a block party that we put on for the community. Every day was filled with joy, and it was so exciting to see how God is using the Janesville corps and its people to spread …

UPDATE #1 We arrived in Mexico City late Monday night and were received by Captain Margarita, Captain Suli and Omar. They drove us to Plaza Garibaldi, a well-known Mariachi neighborhood and our home base for the rest of the summer. For the first week our team consisted of seven members because we were lucky to have Viki Payton with us. We are still trying to adjust to new foods, different eating schedules and a higher altitude. Though sometimes it is difficult to adapt, the culture here is beautiful. On Tuesday we gathered at the Capital Divisional Headquarters to meet Majors Flores and get a clear schedule of our six weeks. We found out our summer will consist of music schools, …

UPDATE #1 It’s been a great first week here in Kenya! We arrived late last Tuesday night in Nairobi and have been going nonstop ever since. We spent several of our days working with various schools, including two nursery schools and a 1st to 8th grade school in the Nairobi and Eastlands divisions. The love and joy that can be seen in each of the students was a blessing to each of us on the team. A big part of our ministry here in Nairobi has included so much dancing! Even in our Sunday worship, we were able to dance and praise the Lord alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ. Keep praying for our team as we adjust to …

UPDATE #1 We’ve had quite an adventure so far! Delayed flights, missed connections and an early morning arrival definitely kept us on our toes. But we made it safely and were able to jump right into the swing of things. Our first week was spent in Miskolc, a city two hours outside Budapest. We conduct a VBS there and really get to know the kids by playing soccer during free time. Andrew and Stephen are definitely getting their workouts for the summer. The next week was spent in a gypsy village a half hour outside of Miskolc. The captains at the Miskolc Corps are growing a new corps in this village. We set up a tent in a field to …
