“Belongings: A Thrift Store Musical” to debut at Belonging 2025

Belongings, written by Stephanie Lamplough with music by Paul Sharman, is a stirring new musical originally produced by the United Kingdom and Ireland Territory. Set to make its American debut at the General’s Congress in the Central Territory in June 2025, the musical explores themes of connection, resilience and the universal need to be seen, heard and valued.

The story unfolds in the familiar setting of a Salvation Army thrift store, but its heart lies in the transformative power of belonging found in Christ.

Described in The Salvationist as “a heartfelt celebration of connection,” Belongings illustrates how meaningful conversations and moments of grace can transform lives, especially when we open our hearts and minds to others.

Co-writer Stephanie Lamplough reflected in The Salvationist that “God is everywhere, in the everyday,” reminding us that even the most ordinary places can serve as a backdrop for extraordinary transformation.

The musical premiered in June 2023 and has toured Salvation Army locations around the United Kingdom. Now, Bill Booth Theater Company director Joe Caddy has adapted it for the Central Territory.

According to Joe, “This adaptation stays true to the original’s spirit while weaving in new narratives reflective of the American experience, such as stories of recovery from substance abuse, the lasting impact of camping ministries, and lives transformed by programs like Pathway of Hope.”

Following a collaborative visit to the UK in early 2024, a preview scene was workshopped at the Resonate Worship Arts Conservatory in August 2024, sparking enthusiasm for the musical’s American debut.

By late 2024, a talented cast had been selected, and rehearsals officially began in January 2025, laying the foundation for a polished and engaging production.

“Everyone in this cast brings something unique, but together, we’re creating something really special,” shared Michelle Polsley, one of four returning performers from the Central Territory’s previous musical production, A Long Way Off.

The Belongings cast, drawn from five divisions across the territory, brings together a diverse range of talents and perspectives to tell this powerful story.

Meling Lopisa, a first-time cast member from the Omaha Citadel, Neb., Corps, added, “Being part of this production is like a dream come true. I’ve always been interested in musicals, and now I finally get to participate in one! I’m also excited to get to know everyone and make some new friends.”

Music director Marc Smith is carefully assembling the pit orchestra to complement the show’s dynamic storytelling.

Meanwhile, the Territorial Visual Communications Department is working diligently to manage technical elements, ensuring a visually stunning and seamless performance when the curtain rises this June at the Miller High Life Theatre in Milwaukee.

Belongings serves as a testament to the enduring power of hope, compassion, and faith in action. With its blend of heartfelt performances, thought-provoking themes, and inspiring music, the production is poised to leave a lasting impact on audiences.

As Michelle Polsley put it, “We’re not just performing but delivering a message of hope and belonging. Doesn’t get more meaningful than that!”

Don’t miss the chance to experience this remarkable production and celebrate the stories of those who have found belonging through The Salvation Army.
