Week 2
The Journey Begins
March 12, 2017
WORSHIP SERVICE OUTLINES
Each worship outline contains all elements needed for your worship service. The order of each service presented is only a suggestion. No doubt changes will be needed to accommodate the flow and worship style of your corps. The outlines are flexible and allow opportunities to “cut and paste” as needed. If you are blessed with instrumental or vocal music resources, you may find there is more structured material here than needed. |
Announcements and Offering

Call to Worship:
14 You see, the controlling force in our lives is the love of the Anointed One. And our confession is this: One died for all; therefore, all have died. 15 He died for us so that we will all live, not for ourselves, but for Him who died and rose from the dead. 16 Because of all that God has done, we now have a new perspective. We used to show regard for people based on worldly standards and interests. No longer. We used to think of the Anointed the same way. No longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is united with the Anointed One, that person is a new creation. The old life is gone—and see—a new life has begun!

Lent Reflections – Repentance
|
Contemplation
Leader: 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 (NIV) |
Confession
All: God of compassion, in Jesus Christ you did not disdain the company of sinners but welcomed them with love. Look upon us in mercy, we pray. Our sins are more than we can bear; our pasts enslave us; our misdeeds are beyond correcting. Forgive the wrongs we cannot undo; free us from a past we cannot change; heal what we can no longer fix. Grace our lives with your love and turn the tears of our past into the joy of new life with you. Amen. [WSB] |

Congregational Prayers: (silent) Prayers for Holiness…
Pastoral Prayer
Father of mercies, we confess that we have sinned against you. By your Holy Spirit, come and work repentance into our hearts. Help us to see you as you are: with outstretched arms, a loving heart, and power to save. Help us to see Jesus, the friend of sinners, and to follow him more faithfully. As we have received him, so strengthen us to walk in him, depend on him, commune with him, and be conformed to him. Give us an experience of your grace that makes us bold, that we might joyfully live for the good of others. Amen. [WSB]

DRAMA
Let’s Make a Deal By Martyn Scott Thomas © Copyright 2016 by Martyn Scott Thomas. All rights reserved. Used by permission. |
|
Topic: | Repentance |
Scripture: | 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 |
Synopsis: | Two prisoners discuss possible plea deals. |
Characters: | Denny
Todd |
Props/Costumes: | A table, two chairs, a chess board, beige or orange shirts (prison attire), and jeans. |
Setting: | A holding cell at a county jail. |
Running time: | 5 minutes |
[Denny and Todd are seated at the table, playing chess. They should continue playing as they talk.]
Denny: You know, this is starting to become a habit.
Todd: I told you, you’d like this game.
Denny: Once you figure out how all the pieces move, it’s not so hard.
Todd: [takes a piece] Yeah, maybe soon you’ll start to offer me a challenge.
Denny: Give me some time. I may surprise you. [takes a piece]
Todd: Well, played.
Denny: Thank you.
Todd: We should really try to get together and play this somewhere other than here.
Denny: Maybe outside in the park.
Todd: Yeah, down by the lake. That would be nice.
Denny: So when do you think you’ll be out this time?
Todd: It may be a while.
Denny: What did they get you for this time?
Todd: B and E.
Denny: Any weapon?
Todd: Not unless you count the crow bar I used to let myself in.
Denny: Did you drop it?
Todd: Yeah, but not until they got there. They caught me in the act this time.
Denny: Oops. That could make things a little tougher.
Todd: I don’t know. We’ll see which Public Defender I get this time. How about you?
Denny: Possession of stolen goods.
Todd: Which goods?
Denny: A few cases of cell phones. [speaks as if talking to the police] “I was holding them for a friend.”
Todd: Good one. You can beat that one. You might even get off with probation.
Denny: I’m hoping. But this is my third time this year. I might have to do some more time.
Todd: Sorry to hear. Maybe they’ll assign Larry to you. He’s always done a good job for me.
Denny: Nah, they gave me some new guy, Joshua.
Todd: Ooh, new guys can be tough.
Denny: Yeah, he’s already asking me to take a plea deal.
Todd: Right off the bat? That can’t be good.
Denny: Actually, it doesn’t sound too bad.
Todd: How much time?
Denny: That’s the thing. He says if I confess to everything, he can get me off with no time served and get my records erased.
Todd: [shaking his head] Rookies, huh? How dumb does he think you are?
Denny: Right? What do they say, “If it sounds too good to be true . . .”
Todd: Then it is. You need to dump that guy and ask for someone else.
Denny: That’s what I thought, but the more I talk to him, the better it sounds.
Todd: Denny, listen to me. Nothing good can ever come out of confessing. That Joshua is feeding you a line. They want to put you away for a long time.
Denny: That’s not what he says.
Todd: And erasing your records? Nobody does that. That’s why it’s so hard for us to ever get a new start. Everybody knows what we’ve done. We have no choice but to end up back in here.
Denny: But don’t you wish you could get a clean start?
Todd: Doesn’t everybody? Guys like us don’t get chances like that. It’s never going to happen.
Denny: But Joshua assured me that . . .
Todd: [interrupting] Joshua nothing. That guys a pawn of the system, trying to impress his bosses and get a confession.
Denny: I don’t know. He seems pretty sincere.
Todd: Don’t they all? Now, let’s just get back to our game.
Denny: What’s the worst that can happen?
Todd: For a career crook like you – hard time.
Denny: Even so, I’m tired of this life. I want something new.
Todd: Join the club.
Denny: I think I’m going to do it.
Todd: Big mistake.
Denny: I don’t know. I like my chances.
Todd: Good luck my friend. You’re going to need it.
Denny: [looking at the board, making one last move] Wait a minute. I think I just won. Is that check mate?
Todd: What? How did you do that?
Denny: Maybe it’s my lucky day.

Journey to the Cross
Lenten Worship Series – Week 2
Small Group Discussion Questions
Extraordinary things occur all around us, but we often fail to notice them. The miraculous and extraordinary become commonplace when we see them day after day.
- What is the most extraordinary sight you have ever seen?
- What amazing occurrences do you often overlook or take for granted?
- Why do we so easily overlook everyday miracles?
Read Luke 2:8-20. As you do, keep track of the ordinary and extraordinary occurrences mentioned in this text.
- What ordinary occurrences did the shepherds encounter?
- What extraordinary occurrences did the shepherds encounter?
- What occurrences might have seemed ordinary but, in reality, were extraordinary and even amazing?
“Christ the Savior is born” is news that is too good to keep to ourselves!
- What is it about the birth of Jesus that makes it news?
- What makes this news so good?
- In what ways have you shared the good news of Jesus with others? Which do you most enjoy? Why?
Read Luke 4:14-15. It describes the good news of Jesus’ birth spreading throughout the surrounding country.
- What was the primary form of communication in the time of Jesus?
- What are the primary forms of communication in our time?
- What are the new ways you would like to try using to communicate the good news about Jesus to others?
The good news of the salvation Jesus earned for us on his cross transforms every nook and cranny in life.
- Is there a particular part of your life in need of good news? If so (and if you are comfortable doing so), share that need with one or two other people in your group.
- How does Jesus’ journey to the cross speak to each specific hurt or struggle you just shared with one another?
Now, pray for one another. Ask the Lord’s guidance and help with the specific hurts and struggles you have mentioned. Ask that the miracle of God’s love for each of you in Christ would transform every part of your lives.
