I never would have guessed I’d be in the position I am today. Having the blessing of overseeing a corps which houses many social services is an answered prayer. I always have loved helping those who need a hand up. Our ministry here in Benton Harbor, Mich., has allowed me the opportunity to minister to those who do not have a home and those who need food. I’ve walked alongside children whose parents battle addictions and other things that have broken their homes. I’ve served people from all walks of life who are looking for help to make it through another day.
As someone who was a recipient of the social services The Salvation Army provides, I see God’s hand working in my life as now I am in the position to help. It reminds me of the love God has for me and how my life has always had a plan. The mercy and love of God has covered me for many days. As I get ready to enter my next year of officership, I am in awe of the way God has moved in my life. I have been stretched, pruned and shaped to be more like Christ.
Walking alongside people who are searching for God’s love in their everyday living provides me with an opportunity to share the message of reconciliation with our Heavenly Father who loves them. While this ministry has brought many challenges, I can confidently say I am exactly where I am supposed to be. Being an officer provides me with the opportunity to mourn with people, rejoice and celebrate with others, and to be the hands and feet of Christ, helping to win the world for Jesus. As an officer, my one goal will always be the same: to love God and to love others.
