The Salvation Army in the Ukraine

The work of The Salvation Army began in Ukraine in 1993 two years after the recommencement of the Army’s work in Eastern Europe. Initially overseen by the Army’s Norway, Iceland and The Faeroes Territory, today Ukraine is part of the Eastern Europe Territory, which includes Georgia, Moldova, Romania and the Russian Federation.

Years of civil unrest have seen the displacement of nearly a million people within Ukraine.  Armiya Spasinya (The Salvation Army in Ukrainian) has been instrumental in providing assistance to this population in addition to the normal social services offered by the Ukraine Division; however, corps in war-torn areas have been temporarily suspended because resources and supplies can’t get through.

In addition to humanitarian aid, the scope of social services offered in the Ukraine include afterschool care, prison ministries, feeding programs, senior centers, women’s ministries and programs for the disabled.
